The Emergency Trauma Fund (ETF) is a non-governmental private fund established to assist trauma centers in a time of shrinking federal and state budgets. ETF’s objective is to provide an additional source of funding for uninsured patients. ETF does not fund all uncompensated care provided by trauma centers but it does give needed relief for qualified cases.
Traffic injuries are one of the leading causes of death for people under the age of 45. Statistics show that patients treated at trauma centers have a 25% higher survival rate compared to those seen in hospitals without those services. Yet, budget restrictions and reductions continue to affect the ongoing effort to monitor the trauma system which depends on the funds allocated to it. The lifetime cost of crash related deaths and injuries in 2005 are calculated at $70 billion dollars.
Since trauma centers can no longer depend on federal and state monies to support their programs, they must look for alternative funding sources to continue providing trauma service. ETF has the potential of being a viable source of funding. Reimbursement rates through ETF are based on the volume of uncompensated care of trauma centers. ETF is now accepting applications for the current calendar year. Immediate funding is available for qualified facilities. Click on the following link to apply: Emergency Trauma Fund Application.
